Review from Stick Your Nose in a Book: Quilting Book Reviews by Jennifer Zoeterman

Well-known author Nancy Mahoney simplifies authentic Depression-era quilts from curved pieced patterns into applique. I don't think this is a beginner book; some experience with applique would be helpful. The book includes eight happy quilts from newspaper patterns that were popular during this decade of "make-do." It also includes facts from each year of this interesting time in American history.

Review from Barbara Rhoades, Amazon.com Top 500 Reviewer

I like the quilts in this book, which features curved piecing or applique. If this is not something you have done, this book will help you learn. There is a section which covers cutting and applique techniques. The eight patterns are all done in 30’s fabric but there is no reason you couldn’t update that to your favorite colors. Each project has a color photo of the finished project and a blurb about it. The best part of this blurb is the history of the block!

Materials and cutting lists are provided and the instructions have enough graphics so you don’t get lost. Templates are provided at full size. There are shaded boxes throughout the book that provide extra tips. The final page is an author bio and two URLs for more information.
