I followed this quilt-along on the author’s web site. For those of you who didn’t or didn’t know about it, this book puts that year-long experience all in one place for easy reference.

100 blocks from simple patchwork to applique and variations in between, this book will challenge your quilting skills. The instructions include a picture of the block, a blurb about it and, of course, the written instructions. Graphics help you along the way. Templates are provided for paper piecing, applique and embroidery work.

The book will give you ideas for your own quilts by using one, two or three of the blocks provided and adding your own creative touches to your project. Adding sashing, plain blocks, hourglass blocks or any of a number of other styles, will allow you to create hundreds of quilted projects from this one book.
This was a Splendid Sampler sew along with more than 23,00o quilters that joined the sew along on Facebook and website The 100 block, 83 designers, and 12 months to share inspiration, techniques, and stories. Detailed illustrations for the construction of the block with alternate colorways included. A lot of methods for quilting are included to satisfy any preference any quilter has, So if you feel "stuck" and you are looking for more and different ideas, this is the book for you. I highly recommend this book.
The blocks in this book are very unique and can be pieced, foundation pieced, embroidered, appliqued, or hand pieced as in the case of English Paper Piecing. Many of them show an alternate colorway, opening our eyes to all their possibilities. There is a gallery at the end of the book with beautiful quilts showcasing the blocks, although I think the usefulness of this book lies in the ideas that pop in our heads for combining them and creating our own masterpiece.

You can find tutorials for the techniques used by referring to the back of the book or by going to The Splendid Sampler website. On the website you will also be able to find out more about the 83 designers who contributed blocks for the book. The Splendid Sampler project lasted for over a year, [virtually] bringing together over 23,000 quilters worldwide to learn and experience the joy of making each block and turning them into amazing projects. What great fun!

I do not feel I am late to the party, though, because I get to enjoy all the blocks in the book. A must-have!
A wonderful collection of traditional and new patterns! Excellent instructions and resource guides. My complete review can be found at
I'm not been a part of making these blocks but am looking forward to getting the book because my guild does charity quilting for one of the hospitals in our area with a large maternity ward for families with or without Ins. We make up a lot of baby quilts and you have a lot in there that can be made into resolution squares 12" pulse borders. They are given to the mothers that loses her baby at birth or surgery. It is also a great way to use up your scraps.

Review from Down Under Quilts, Issue 180

Sampler quilts are a good way to try out new techniques and colourways without committing to a whole quilt, and they are perfectly suited to using up leftovers and scraps. The Splendid Sampler started life as an online project, taking a year for all the blocks to be revealed to the participants. As many different designers were involved in the process, there is a variety of blocks, and definitely something for everyone. You will enjoy leafing through the pages, selecting your favourite blocks and coming up with your own unique version of the Splendid Sampler quilt.
