Neutrals are not just for backgrounds anymore! Twelve quilts, each made with subtle shades of gray, brown, black, and beige, prove that neutrals are sophisticated and appealing when used as the main fabrics in a quilt. You'll look at traditional designs in a new way.
Review from New Zealand Quilter magazine
Spotlight on Neutrals: Quilts and More for Any Decor by Pat Wys has a collection of gorgeous elegant soft-coloured pieced quilts. Two-block combinations create eye-catching quilts and a free-flowing applique vase of flowers, set on a pieced backgrounds of neutrals is particularly lovely. Using off-colours, these quilts also suit the popular Japanese taupe fabrics.
Review from Australian Homespun magazine
This book was something of a revelation for us. We'd seen it in Martingale's catalogue of forthcoming releases and didn't expect it to be terribly interesting: just patchwork worked in beige, taupe, cream and grey fabrics. There didn't seem to be much in that idea. Well, we stand corrected. Author Pat Wys says in her introduction that she loves "every single colour" and "prints large and small, from vintage to whimsical" but she wanted to challenge fellow quiltmakers to allow neutrals to be the star of the show from time to time, not just the support cast. There are 12 projects in the book, including two cushions and two appliqued wallhangings, with the remainder being bed-size patchwork quilts. The designs are primarily traditional patchwork blocks, but when worked entirely in neutrals, their impact is novel, interesting and unexpected. The close-up of the bed quilt on the front cover is indicative of what you'll find inside. None of the projects is especially challenging, so they really do allow you to delight in bringing the designs to life in fabrics that are often relegated to mere backgrounds. The results would suit all kinds of interior decorating, and even though the fabric prints might include some florals, the projects seem to lend themselves to gender-neutral (excuse the pun) or masculine quilts.
