From Sew News magazine comes this book of 24 projects to suit any decor. Included are pillows, place mats, pot holders, curtains, and lampshades. The skill levels range from beginner to advanced with techniques such as pleating, gathering, boxing corners, adding trims, using decorative built-in machine stitches, and embroidery by machine used in the projects. Also included is a sewing glossary with information about types of seams, embroidery stitches, and more.
The colorful photos in this book motivate me to get out my sewing machine and fabric remnants. My sewing skills fall into the intermediate category but I thought the instructions, diagrams, and photos were clear and easy to understand even for a beginner for most of the projects. Patterns are included for a few of the projects that need to be enlarged on a copier or scanner.
I especially like the buttoned pillows and placemat projects, and there is a lampshade that is beautiful, taking a plain shade and embellishing it with three-dimensional designs by layering flower and bird motifs cut from printed fabric and adding buttons to the centers of the flowers.
This is a book anyone who enjoys making home decor items would love to have. It inspires ideas beyond the projects given.
