Martingale seems to do a consistently good job with their knitting books – these days even better, perhaps, than the quilting books with which they established themselves. This latest publication is another good one in that it’s filled with instructions for garments that real people would wear. And while they’d all look good with a stylish pair of jeans or slacks for weekend wear, they’d also be more than suitable for many work places that we can think of.
This book is a sequel to Doreen’s Saturday Sweaters; the projects in this latest volume, she says in her introduction, require slightly more skill and technique, but even so, “they’re still sweaters that the not-so-advanced knitter will feel confident tackling.” What’s more, since many of the designs are constructed in an unusual way, even experienced knitters will find them interesting to make.
Each of the projects is shown in a full page color photograph, being worn by a model. Doreen provides a brief introductory comment, highlighting unusual or especially interesting aspects of the project. There’s also a guide to the skill level required: five are rated intermediate (3 on a scale of 1-4) and the remainder are all rated easy (2 on a scale of 1-4). Instructions are provided for bust sizes from 34" up to 52" or 54". At the back of the book are brief notes and diagrams for some of the techniques used in the book—not enough for an absolute novice, but helpful for an intermediate knitter looking for a refresher. All in all, a rather good book!

Doreen L. Marquart's Saturday Style: Casual Knits for Weekend Wear should be a pick for any knitter or needlework library. It offers a selection of easy knits that need minimal finishing and range from pullovers and cardigans to a jacket. The focus on casual, easy and stylish knits makes this a fine project collection for knitters seeking something different. Full-page color photos of the knits on models accompany easy materials lists and step-by-step directions.

In 1993, she opened Needles 'n Pins Yarn Shoppe, devoted exclusively to the needs of knitters and crocheters. With well over 40,000 skeins of yarn in stock, fiberaholics drive from hours away to have her "feed their addiction" and to receive help with their knitting/crocheting projects. Doreen earned the title of Master Knitter through the Knitting Guild of America in 1998, Canadian Master Knitter in 2001, and Master Canadian Designer in 2002.
