Many years ago when I had to undergo major surgery, my friend gave me 8 different little embroideries on cream calico and matching variegated thread to occupy my hands and keep my mind busy whilst I recuperated. I finished them over about 7 weeks and eventually sewed them into a gorgeous table runner, which I love to this day.

I recently received a complimentary ecopy by one of Australia’s foremost patchwork and quilt designers, Gail Pan. Gail has recently published a pretty little companion book for quilters who also love to embroider. It’s called Patchwork Loves Embroidery, hand stitches, pretty projects and is a delightful book to have in your library.

Gail has been designing patterns since 2003 and has a worldwide following of enthusiastic embroiderers. Her gentle and delicate designs are very attractive, slightly learning towards naïve embroidery , but not over the top by any means.

Gail has a knack of combining gorgeous colours and colour schemes with a professional touch, so that takes the guess work out of which colours will look best.

In this collection of full sized patterns Gail includes wall hangings, totes, table runners, little quilts and lots lots more. A number of the patterns can be mixed and matched so you really get a pretty good bang for your buck with this publication.

I like that Gail has taken the time to describe the simple fancy embroidery stitches that are used in this book, and her photo images and diagrams are very clear and easy to understand.

I thoroughly recommend this book to all quilters and embroiderers alike.
I think embroidery is making a come-back, and this book fulfills the desires of the modern hand stitcher/embroiderer. There are lots of cute projects to make for yourself or as gifts. My favorite design in the bird - so cute!

Review from Anorina Morris, Samelia's Mum Blog, May 2014

Gail Pan is a very talented Australian designer and her new book Patchwork Loves Embroidery is just gorgeous and perfect for anyone who wants to sit and enjoy a little hand sewing. Patchwork Loves Embroidery features 15 projects for embroiderers and sewists of all skill levels. From pincushions and table mats to bags and quilts, there is a project in here to suit any taste. Embroidery and sewing basics are covered at the beginning of the book with excellent stitching and sewing instructional diagrams. Gail then encourages the sewist to feel free to mix and match the projects. If we like a stitchery from a quilt but want to use it on a bag, just do it!

The designs are so pretty and whimsical and lend themselves to any number of projects. The full size pattern sheets make transferring the designs so very simple. Love, love, love this!...

If you love to stitch or know someone who does, do yourself (or them) a favour and purchase Patchwork Loves Embroidery. It is bursting with projects and ideas and will make a wonderful addition to any craft book library.
Review from Morna McEver Golletz, ICAP Newsletter, June 2014

I have noticed an increasing trend toward handwork, perhaps as a social activity, perhaps as a meditative exercise, perhaps just to relax. I think you will enjoy these delightful designs from Australian Gail Pan. You will find 15 patchwork and hand-embroidery projects ranging from wall hangings to table runners, from totes to several charming journal covers. You can mix and match the patterns and designs to end up with an endless collection of projects. I am looking forward to starting one of the small pincushions.

Gail Pan

Gail Pan lives on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia, at the foot of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges (a series of low, verdant mountain ranges). Growing up in a home where sewing was always an important part of life, it was only natural that she tried every craft there was. She has always had some kind of project in the works.

In 2003, at the encouragement of friends who were opening a patchwork business, Gail began to design and release her own patterns. She's been designing ever since and has also branched out into designing fabric. Gail teaches all over the world and gets great satisfaction from sharing her love of needle and thread.
