Review from Popular Patchwork, September 2013
What a clever combination of quilts Amy Ellis has put together in this title. Although by their very nature the palettes are similar, the quilts are so incredibly varied in design that the common theme of neutrality almost falls by the wayside. Taking in a variety of techniques, the projects in this title will help you to learn new skills you may not have tried yet such as pleated patchwork and curved quilting to create the illusion of waves. And it shows you how to adapt work you may have already done with squares, rectangles and triangles to create a cornucopia of different styles. The cover picture, Whispered Lace, which incorporates white sashing to great effect, is my favourite design, with Digital Pinwheel a close second, but all fifteen projects are special in their own way.
Review from The Quilter, October/November 2013
No-nonsense neutrals--we just can't seem to get enough of them! In this refreshing approach to contemporary quilt design, best-selling author Amy Ellis combines subtle tones with simple piecing to create quilts with a trendy flair. "This book is for those who want their quilts to accent and accompany modern living spaces," Amy writes. With an eye for design, Amy turns easy four-patch blocks into circuit boards, plain squares into digital pinwheels, and quarter-square triangles into artistic prisms--all in assorted shades of beige, brown, cream, white, black, and gray. There are 15 beginner and intermediate-level projects in all, ranging in size from bed quilts to wall hangings. It's a mod mod world, and Amy Ellis is right on top!
Review from Modern Patchwork, Winter 2014
This book lures you in with its stunning cover quilt and then continues to delight throughout. Who knew neutrals could be so vibrant and that beige looked so beautiful next to gray? Well, Amy did! She offers 15 projects with a variety of size options that are suitable for advanced beginners on up. Piecing fans will truly enjoy the intricacies that can be created by arranging the humble square, rectangle, and triangle in varied and new combinations. Also included are tips and tricks, a tutorial on quilt making basics and thoughts on fabric selection. Here's my favorite: whenever you find good large-scale neutrals, which can be rare, stock up! Readers will appreciate the ample photos and excellent block diagrams.
