Lori provides a 12 step set up including marking pens, battings, threads, bobbin threads, and quilt designs. Then, the skill building techniques are covered and include technique, tension, motif, the perfect stitch, even stitches, stopping points, knots, and balance of quilt density to list a few. This book encourages you to do the quilting yourself and provides detailed and practical explanations and illustrations. The only way to get a better education on quilting is to take classes. If that is not an option for you then this book does a good job for those that want quilt their own quilts with great results.
The motifs in this book are divided into 8 categories (loops, pictorial, flowers, etc.), each one accompanied by step-by-step photographs to help you create amazing texture on your projects. I do love single-line designs for free-motion quilting, but never attempted designs such as houses, umbrellas, and pencils before.

Although I am no stranger to free-motion quilting, Lori's 12-Step Setup check list is a perfect reminder of things we need to do as we get ready to quilt. The section on marking tools and threads (two anxiety-building items for many beginners) was comprehensive and to-the-point.

I looked through the pages and thought "Yes, I can do this". This book has spiral binding: I kept it open on the page I needed next to my sewing machine as I could easily refer to it when I did not know where to go next when I attempted one of the motifs. Sweet!

Note to new machine quilters: The author assumes the reader has some experience with machine quilting. If you are new to machine quilting, consider a pictorial book or a video that gives an overview of the entire machine quilting process (including preparing the sandwiched batt, placing it on the machine, and holding and moving the batt while sewing).

Review from Online Quilt Magazine, April 2018

This very comprehensive book with its "61 designs to finish your quilts with flair" will provide all the inspiration you need for your quilting. Loops and Lines, Spirals, Leaves, Flowers, Pictorial, Circles and Squares are all covered in this book. Being spiral-bound and with a double page spread per pattern, is an excellent way to see the whole design as you work through it step by step. At the end of each is even a grid so that you can practise drawing your designs. Lori explains her inspiration to quilt, but advises that you "make the designs your own". "Have fun while quilting" she says and remember - "A quilt without personality is just a blanket!" Lori has lots of suggestions for setting up to quilt; what tension, foot or needle and thread to use and then talks about doodling and planning motifs to suit your quilt. This book contains all you'll ever need to quilt with flair as promised, with excellent photos and explanations.
