The book starts with a one-page introduction, followed by a four-page Churn Dash basic techniques. Next, the book shows you five ways to lay out the blocks that create a Churn Dash, making each block look different.

The book has 15 patterns. Each has a blurb, material and cutting lists and you might just find a special note set off in a two-sided box. There are plenty of graphics to help you visualize what you are creating. If templates are needed, they are provided at full size. A quilting design to finish the project is left up to you. The end of the book has a page of bios of all the authors that provided patterns.

What I didn’t see among all the patterns was one with two of the blocks from page 9 – a block with a cross in the center and a block with an asymmetrical design. That is not a problem for me but I’m going to bet there are some quilters out there that would like to see a pattern using these two blocks.
So much more than a simple block. Karen Burns has compiled innovative patterns from 15 top designers to showcase the churn dash block. Their patterns provide a wide variety of styles and techniques with hard and soft edges, secondary patterns, the use of positive and negative space, block scale and fabric. The detailed instructions are clear and concise with insights from the individual designers. Always appreciate learning new shortcuts and tips! Martingale continues to deliver the highest quality and value for both new and experienced quilters.
